Remote/Virtual Monitoring Waiver Open to Apply for In California

CDSS CACFP Branch Announcement and Guidance

After much anticipation, CDSS CACFP Branch has issued a CACFP Bulletin announcing the availability of a waiver of Onsite Monitoring Requirements for Program Year 2023-2024. This is specific to Sponsors of Family Child Care Homes. The bulletin provides eligibility requirements, application instructions, and implementation guidance for Sponsors of Family Child Care Homes. Here is all of the information from CDSS CACFP Branch.

Perspective from the CACFP Roundtable

CACFP Roundtable celebrates the arrival of this waiver for California sponsors of homes. We commend the CDSS CACFP Branch for the hard work they've done to get the waiver approved by the USDA FNS and implemented at the state level. We appreciate their desire for community feedback with the implementation of this waiver and their commitment to continuing to engage the community to inform possible future implementation plans.

CACFP Roundtable also acknowledges that implementation of this year's waiver is a very short period of time — essentially 5 weeks for implementation from when the 2023-24 waiver guidance and application has been distributed.

CDSS CACFP Branch has expressed their intention to submit a request to renew the waiver for the upcoming 2024-25 program year and CACFP Roundtable is actively encouraging their timely submission and advocating a quick approval from USDA FNS.

We also know that a longer-term solution is needed to modernize monitoring and stabilize the use of virtual monitoring in the CACFP.  CACFP Roundtable continues to work with national advocates to make virtual monitoring a permanent and sustainable solution for sponsors and state agencies.

We'll be updating and re-releasing our CACFP Roundtable Remote Review Protocol Guide for the CACFP, originally published in October of 2020. Stay tuned!
