Recall on Jif Peanut Butter Products

Yesterday, the Department of Social Services, CACFP Branch, sent out a notification regarding a recall of JIF peanut butter products. It is copied below. You can view the email here.

On May 20, 2022, the J. M. Smucker Company voluntarily recalled select Jif peanut butter products sold in the U.S. for potential Salmonella contamination. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people who get ill from Salmonella have diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps and will recover without specific treatment; however, symptoms could be severe and require hospitalization.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide to retail stores and other outlets. Due to the number of products being recalled and peanut butter’s popularity, it is likely that these products have reached many centers and homes through commercial retail channels. Note: USDA Foods were not impacted.

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) strongly advises Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Operators to ensure Jif peanut butter products with recalled lot codes are disposed of immediately by following the steps below.

  1. Locate the lot code on the back of the jar next to the Best If Used By Date.

  2. If the first four digits in the lot code are between 1274 and 2140 and if the next three numbers are 425, this product was recalled and should not be consumed. A sample label is located on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Outbreak Investigation of Salmonella: Peanut Butter web page.

For more information including a list of products and lot codes, access the FDA announcement.
